Recently the city of Chiatung refused almost one thousand pre-constructed homes for the displaced, citing that the homes may contain toxins.
This is one instance when city governments should place people over politics and not look a gift-horse in the mouth. It is quite a shame that 700 homes which would have served the displaced homeless are now idle because of the politicalness of the town's government.
In any case, making the case public is in essence a slap in the face to China, who offered the homes for free. It would have been better to accept the homes and quietly test for contaminants if the fear arises. A Chinese spokeswoman for China's Taiwan Affairs Office said "These mobile homes are strictly produced according to Taiwan's design requirements and technical standards by the mainland's top producers."
