Mao's Stupid Ideas

Chairman Mao, now deceased, was a man of madness. In 1958 he launched a campaign to kill all the sparrows in Beijing, by suspending schools and stopping work, and forcing everyone in the city to make lots of noise and move around so that the sparrows in the city would have no place to land, eat, or drink. After three days of this insane activity half a million sparrows were dead in the city.

The idea was born of Mao's hatred of sparrows and the noise they make. However, after they had died Beijing was overrun with bugs of all kinds, especially bed bugs. I was this massive increase in insect population that contributed to the mass famine in the city and deaths amounting to 20 million humans.

Government intervention in natural things is almost always bad, and today we must be wary that it does not happen again.
